About Camp CHILD
(Children Having Identified Learning Disabilities)

Camp CHILD is focused on what its name implies: Children . We exist to provide a summer program where children with learning disabilities of many ages, backgrounds, and abilities, can grow, learn, thrive. We work extensively with local schools, as well as educational and cultural institutions, to provide diverse experiences for our students. Theme: Who Lives in the Woods.

Our Objective

Camp CHILD provides a summer program of individualized academic instruction to help bridge the gap between school years. It also provides other interesting activities for the overall social, psychological, emotional, and physical development of participants. Camp CHILD accepts children with learning disabilities without regard to race, creed, national origin, or financial status. We can accept up to 10% of campers with other disabilities or learning challenges.

What is a day at camp like?

The day is broken into 2 parts. In the morning the academic program is designed to meet the specific needs of children with learning disabilities during the crucial summer months, when some of the skills learned during the school year may begin to deteriorate. An individualized program is provided by professionally trained teachers and specialists. In the afternoon the "camp" phase of the program has activities in arts and crafts, exploratory activities (Science, Art, Karate, etc), cooperative games, swimming, and social skills.

Features of the program

  • The theme for summer 2009 is Flashback and we will be exploring the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. Teachers will explore these time periods and explore scientific discoveries, historical events, ways of life, music, and anything else that pertains to these time periods.  We will bring in speakers to go with the theme, go on a field trip once a week and many other activities that will keep the campers involved and interested in daily participation.
  • Located at James River Day School, 5039 Boonsboro Rd., Lynchburg
  • The program runs four weeks (M-F), from July 7 through July 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Campers benefit from small group instruction.
  • Individualized Education Plans are requested from the schools so that the camp teachers can begin instruction where the schools left off.
  • Emphasis is placed on developing confidence, success experiences, motivation for learning, and social skills.
  • Parents are encouraged to participate through individual teacher conferences, camp visits, and a final awards program.
